What is a behavior consultation?
by Claire Anderson, CSAP-BC, FDM, CPDT-KA, FFCP
Behavior consultations involve a comprehensive assessment of the dog's behavior, learning style, needs, environment, schedule, health, their social interactions, and the humans in their life.
During a canine behavior consultation, we will typically observe the dog in various contexts, interview you to gather information about who the dog is, their history and daily routine, past trauma, physical health, and assess the living environment and schedule. The goal is to identify the root causes of maladaptive behaviors such as aggression, fear, anxiety, excessive barking, or destructive tendencies.
For dogs with separation anxiety, a specific assessment will take place. This allows us to determine exactly what amount of time the dog does feel comfortable being left alone, if any. We will also learn whether or not we are treating hyper-attachment.
Once the assessment is complete, we develop a tailored behavior modification plan. This plan may include veterinary referrals, positive reinforcement training techniques, environmental modifications, and management strategies to address the specific issues identified. We will provide education on understanding canine body language, communication cues, and how to implement the recommended interventions effectively.
Throughout the consultation process, emphasis is placed on creating a positive and supportive relationship between your dog and you. Follow-up sessions may be scheduled to monitor progress, make adjustments to the behavior modification plan, and provide ongoing guidance and support. We will also discuss realistic expectations for your dog’s unique journey.
Canine behavior consultations aim to enhance the overall well-being of the dog(s) and strengthen your relationship. They are valuable for addressing behavioral challenges, promoting a harmonious living environment, and ensuring that both the dog(s) and their human companions enjoy a safe, fulfilling, and positive relationship.
After the consultation, you will receive a follow-up review email with recommended homework, reading, a summarized plan, and additional helpful resources. Depending on your unique situation, more sessions may be recommended.
Who can benefit from a behavior consultation?
Behavior consultations are valuable for every dog/human team. An empathetic professional's insight can help deepen relationships, reduce stress, and increase overall happiness.
Most often, they are utilized for dogs with maladaptive behaviors that are disruptive to their daily lives or the lives of their humans. They are also great for shelters, rescues, trainers, veterinarians, dogs and families who have changing situations, and specific or unique situations.
Essentially, anyone facing challenges with their dog's behavior or simply wanting to improve their dog’s life—regardless of the specific circumstances—can benefit from a canine behavior consultation. These consultations provide tailored guidance to address the unique needs of the dog and their human family.
